Taking my customary morning walk from Palamos on Sea, down to the rocky beach there is a lovely ocean edge trail to the Port and back, which is an approximately a 6 km walk.

Another glorious morning in St Francis Bay, my dog Grady and I set off. Not long into the walk I noticed thrashing around approximately 20m into the ocean.  My first thought was that a dolphin had got itself caught in fishing boats rope or a net. The animal was rolling over and over and I could see the fin was of a whale, she was without a doubt in distress. I cursed because I had left without my phone this particular morning. I needed it to try to capture a video and to alert the NSRI.

We helplessly carried on watching just in case she was able to get herself free and suddenly I saw a baby whale pop to the surface. No sooner had this happened Mom and her baby swam out to deeper waters. I learnt afterwards that mom gives birth and moves the pup and herself away from the birthing site as soon as she can because the blood and after birth attract sharks.

What an uplifting and awesome experience, something I will never forget. Nature you are breath-taking!
